چکیده
We study the effect of environment on the properties of type Ia supernovae by analyzing the integrated spectra of 57 local type Ia supernova host galaxies. We deduce from the spectra the metallicity, current star formation rate, and star formation history of the host and compare these to the supernova decline rates. Additionally, we compare the host properties to the difference between the derived supernova distance and the distance determined from the best-fit Hubble law. From this we investigate possible uncorrected systematic effects inherent in

In this paper, we discuss the benefits of ground-based, adaptive optics (AO) aided observations for star formation research. After outlining the general advantages, we present results obtained during the ALFA science demonstration programme in 1999. These results underline the absolute necessity of AO assistance for almost any kind of observations regarding star formation regions.

Chemical evolution of galaxies brings together ideas on stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis with theories of galaxy formation, star formation and galaxy evolution, with all their associated uncertainties. In a new perspective brought about by the Hubble Deep field and follow-up investigations of global star formation rates, diffuse background etc., it has become necessary to consider the chem...

The 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North survey provides the deepest view of the Universe in the 0.5–8.0 keV X-ray band. In this brief review we investigate the diversity of X-ray selected sources and focus on the constraints placed on AGNs (including binary AGNs) in high-redshift submm galaxies.

We investigate the relation between the characteristics of the circumnuclear stellar population and both the galaxy morphology and the presence of close companions for a sample of 35 Seyfert 2 nuclei. Fifteen galaxies present unambiguous signatures of recent episodes of star formation within ≈300 pc from the Jansky Fellow Gemini Fellow

The molecular gas in (some) early type galaxies holds important clues to the history and the future of these galaxies. In pursuit of these clues we have used the BIMA millimeter array to map CO emission in the giant elliptical galaxies NGC 83 and NGC 2320 and to search for CO emission from the S0 galaxy NGC 5838. We also present V and R images of NGC 83 and NGC 2320 which trace their dust distr...
